Barcelona have been hit by a fresh injury blow as Fermin Lopez has picked up a problem on international duty with Spain.

Lopez had been called up by the Under-21s for upcoming Euro qualifiers against Scotland and Hungary but has now left the camp and been replaced by Pablo Torre.

Here’s the national team’s official statement:

“Pablo Torre will join the Spanish under-21 team in the next few hours. The player from Cantabria replaces Fermín López in the squad.

“Following medical tests carried out this morning, Fermín López has suffered a muscle injury that makes it impossible for him to play in the two matches the national team will play this September.

“The medical services of the Royal Spanish Football Federation and those of FC Barcelona have decided that the most appropriate option is for the player to return to his club to continue his recovery.”

The injury comes after a busy summer for Lopez. He played at Euro 2024 and the Olympics for Spain and then returned to Barca after a short break.

His call-up to the Under-21s looked a little unnecessary and now looks an even worse call as Lopez joins the likes of Ronald Araujo, Ansu Fati, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong and Marc Bernal on Barca’s injured list.
