Former Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic has been talking about the club’s dismal defeats to Liverpool and Roma and why the team did not enjoy more success in Europe.

Barca crashed out of the Champions League to Roma despite leading 4-1 from the first leg, while they threw away a 3-0 lead at Anfield against Liverpool in another collapse.

Rakitic says the team were basically bored and lacked the hunger needed to pick up more titles.

Here’s what he’s had to say:

“In my opinion, and I say this with respect for our opponents, it was all due to boredom… everyone praised us, saying how we were the best team in the world and we went onto the pitch thinking about everything except football,” he told Canal Sur Radio.

“We were wrong, if If we had still been hungry from the beginning, we would have won two or three more Champions League titles. And instead we felt much superior to the others and football punished us for it.”

Barcelona have gone on to struggle in Europe but will be hoping to make an impact in the competition this season under new manager Hansi Flick.
